Prayer

This is a given for most, but before starting bible study – PRAY. Ask for revelation of the Word and that you have a spiritual ear to hear beyond distractions. Pray for revelation, interpretation and an unbiased Kingdom viewpoint.

Put ACTION Behind Your Prayer

Get rid of all distractions as much as you can. Turn off the T.V. Silence your phone. Let other household members know you are studying and to disturb you ONLY in an emergency. (if you’re a momma this is a must.)

Use a Study Guide

Unless the Holy Spirit is guiding you, use a topical Bible study (focused on a specific topic with multiple scripture references) or an exegesis Bible study (focused on one verse or chapter, exploring its full meaning, including historical facts, genre, author, and audience). Both methods help better understand scripture in context.

Use a Bible Study Method

This allows for a deeper understanding of the text and how to apply it to your life. For example, methods like S.O.A.P. (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer) or A.P.P.L.E. are popular. There are many options, so find what works best for you.

Do Your Research

Find a good parallel Bible, Bible dictionary, and interlinear/concordance, but be sure to research the author. A quick Google search can reveal their beliefs and ministry background. Check if their doctrines align with scripture. If they do, thank God for a solid resource. If not, keep searching!

Dig In!

Immerse yourself fully in your relationship with Christ—this can’t be emphasized enough. Keep seeking, asking, and digging deeper. Cross-reference scriptures (use the small letters next to key words for deeper insight), and invest in a good study Bible to enhance your understanding.
